Disneyland 1998 ATTRACTIONS Series
In 1998, before the beginning of Pin Trading, Disneyland released 67 open-edition pins which collectors quickly named the “1998 Attractions” pins. Disney did not release them with this in mind, and it’s been a contentious topic among collectors since they hit the racks. Since so many people know them as this, we’re going to catalogue the pins here under this appellation. The total of 67 was determined, at the time, by the consecutive numbering of the SKUs. (Unfortunately, many of the numbers were skipped at the time, so this was one of those “good try but no cigar” moments.) In reality, Disneyland was just releasing pins which spotlighted some of their more popular attractions throughout the years. The pins sold, between 1998 and 2000, for $6.00 each.
Please carefully check the back of your pin before cataloguing on PinPics. If your pin does not have a current listing in the database, please send good photos of the front and back to @thetwins. (Please read our Photo Guidelines before sending.)
VERSION 1
The original 1998 release of these pins came on black plastic cards (some with the Disney Designs logo on them, others with the DLR castle logo). They had metal pinbacks, and the backs had the classic waffle pattern and were stamped ©DISNEY.
VERSION 2
Subsequent re-orders (1998-1999) had the same metal pinbacks and waffle pattern on the back, but the backstamp changed to ©DISNEY CHINA (sometimes all caps, sometimes initial caps).
VERSION 3
In 2000, a number of these pins (not all) were reproduced for the “new pin trading craze” and sold as open-edition carded pins with metal pinbacks. The backstamp changed to “©Disney, Released in Year 2000, China” (also sometimes caps or initial caps).
FRAMED SETS
Also in 1998, the Disneyland Gallery released four Limited-Edition Framed Sets to commemorate the different “eras” of Tomorrowland: 1955-1961, 1961-1966, 1966-1997, and 1998. There was a lithograph on the left, with attraction pins to the right. The pins used the same art but were smaller than the original open-edition releases. Both the framed sets and their pins were a limited edition and individually numbered. These were expensively framed and matted, retailing at around $150.
PRESS KITS
Given to members of the Press at the 1998 re-opening of Tomorrowland, these three-pin sets came in 5x2" boxes with a clear plastic lid. The epoxy-coated pins were about 1" square (smaller than the open-edition pins) and had different art and coloring than the released versions. The backs were a smooth finish, had a single pin post with one barb, and were stamped ©Disney. One pin was silver, one gold, the other copper. It’s possible that Printer’s Proofs were used in these sets, but they didn’t mark them PP back then. It’s also possible that a small run of cheaper pins was produced for these sets.
