MAGICAL MUSICAL MOMENTS (Disney Store)
On 21 Sep 2002, the Disney Stores released the first wave of MAGICAL MUSICAL MOMENTS pins. Eight pins were released each Saturday thereafter, until the full series of 104 pins was completed on December 14th. Each pin is stamped on the back with PIN #XXX, ©DISNEY, and Made in China. (Even the back pattern was unique with lots of music notes, G clefs, and Mickey heads.) The non-musical pins retailed for $4.50/each, the musical pins for $8.50/each. On 25 Sep 2002, Disney released an embroidered pin bag to hold all 104 pins. In late October, a three-ring binder followed.
In all but the first and last weeks, there was one pin in each release which actually played music. These pins each had FOUR variations, with “some small detail that will make it different”. Each Disney Store was only sent ONE of the versions, so you had to visit different stores and/or trade for all four. The Disney Distribution Center was randomly shipping to each store, so the stores did not know (in advance) which pins they would be selling. (Many, if not most, of the music boxes have since stopped working but can often be repaired by replacing the batteries. It isn’t easy, but it can be done.)
This series was not designed to highlight Disney characters. It celebrated the MUSIC of Disney, and each pin spotlighted a different song from a Disney movie or show.
N.B. Many of these pins were released at the Japan Disney Store, running about a month behind the US. This list does not cover the Japan releases. They have separate listings on PinPics. Please check carefully before cataloguing your pin!
