Front Description
Walt Disney Concert Hall opened in Los Angeles on October 16, 2003. The hall is the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The project was first begun 16 years ago when Lillian Disney (Walt's widow) gave the County of Los Angeles a $50 million gift. Because Walt loved music, she gave the gift to fund a concert hall that would be an enduring memorial to Walt. What followed, unfortunately, were many problems that for a time seemed to doom the project. Eventually, Walt's daughter, Diane Disney Miller, stepped in to jump start the project again. She and other members of the Disney family also contributed an additional $60 million toward construction. The hall finally opened to ecstatic reviews, and the architect Frank Gehry incorporated many elements to honor Lillian Disney. In a sense, then, the hall is a tribute to the whole Disney family. The pin (for sale in the orchestra's gift shop) shows the exterior of the highly unconventional building. Below it, against a blue bar, is silver type with the initials WDCH (Walt Disney Concert Hall.) The ACME logo is stamped on the back of this pin.
