Front Description
This reproduction of a Mickey Mouse pocket watch is part of a series of at least 32 ceramic pins released by Flights of Fancy during the early 1980s.
The red pocket watch has a grey metal color for the winding mechanism with hand-painted black detail. The face of the watch is white, with the traditional watch numbers in black. A full figure classic Mickey Mouse (white face, pie eyed) stands forward with face to the right. His arms are used as the minute and hour hands. The time appears to be 1:42 or 8:06 (take your pick).
The pin itself is rather thick - about 5 mm wide - and measures 1 1/8" (29 mm) wide by 1 1/2" (38 mm) tall. It had a glued-on straight-back with clasp. There is no backstamp.
Roz Simon and Wendy Niven were the designers and owners of Flights of Fancy - a ceramic jewelry company in business from the late 1970's to early 1990's. The Disney pin series was produced in the early 1980's.
Pins were licensed by Disney and sold in the U.S. at department stores such as Bloomingdales and Macy's, as well as various boutiques, gift stores, chain stores, etc. They were sold internationally; Japan, in particular, featured them in many of their stores and in magazines.
Flights of Fancy jewelry gained fame from taking popular items - from boxes of crayons, Chiclets Chewing Gum boxes, tape dispensers and other whimsical subjects - and creating colorful ceramic pins. Some were brooch-style and others had a single post back. The pins can still be found in secondary markets worldwide.
